What Melanie Phillips Was Wrong About:

“Slut Walks” do not promote treating women as sexual objects. They challenge the societal belief that what a woman wears defines how she should be treated, who she is as a person and in effect, if she deserves to be sexually assaulted. Ever heard of the phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover?’

What Melanie Phillips Was Wrong About:

The whole idea, concept of ‘Slut Walks’ (of modern day feminism, really) is to take the words that attack us and own them, show their absurdity to the world. ‘Slut’ is a term not brought on by the feminist community but rather by society itself. The core bases of these rallies are to showcase the insanity of blaming a woman for a sexual assault based on what she’s wearing. Why must women be forced to hide their bodies because some men cannot control their testosterone? And then, why is it still blamed on women because they wear what’s comfortable, what they like, or whatever the hell they want? The problem here is not what women wear, but how women are still perceived by society and not allowed to wear what they choose. After all, it is just a body… everyone’s got one.

These outfits you claim as ‘provocative’ dressing… has it ever crossed you mind that it’s not to leer men? Many women dress sexy to make themselves feel good. It’s empowering. 

What Melanie Phillips Was Wrong About:

What you wear does not define who you are, that’s so absurd! In some senses it could, if you are part of a larger community such as goth. But to suggest that a woman showing cleavage wishes to be fantasized about is ludicrous! She possibly has cleavage because, it’s natural for women to have cleavage! This is the 21st century, women will now refuse to be ashamed of their bodies and furthermore, may choose to show them off because they have the right to feel confident in themselves! And THAT’S feminism.
